On January 20, the 45th President of the United
States will be sworn in, and approximately 6 billion people globally will watch
it happen. And there are some who won’t.
But, that won’t stop it from happening.
That seems to be the thing about life—when we least expect it, when we’re
not ready for it, when we think we need more time—it happens. Life, that is.
So, no matter what side you are or were on during the past 15 months of the
election debacle, here we are.
Tensions are high; you don’t have to be an expert in
emotional intelligence to recognize that some people are dealing with the
upcoming inauguration in very different ways, and those ways don’t often
reflect the views of their friends, family members or maybe even general
society. This often creates even more
tension. So, let’s try to take the
anxiety down a notch. Let’s try to
remember that at the end of the day, most people try to be decent citizens and
quality humans. Let’s try to extend
kindness to one another so that kindness becomes the norm, rather than the
exception. Let’s all remember who we
are.
To do that, maybe we should take a look at some of those who
came before us. Let’s look at someone
who dared to stare down the hostility and degradation of racism not with the arrogance
of a pointed finger and a rolled eye, but with the kindness of a smile and a
soothing word or two. It seems fitting
now, one day passed, to talk about MLK and what he stood for then, as well as
what his legacy stands for now.
You all know the “I Have a Dream” speech, and you all know
that it is a rhetorical masterpiece, ripe with all the devices and strategies
that good literature is famous for, but what it also is is one man’s blueprint
for his own American Dream. 54 years
ago, Dr. Kind delivered that speech about his dream of equality. In some ways, the world is a very different
place now than it was then. However,
there are some who would say it is not nearly as different as it should be.
So, your challenge this week is to carefully consider the
upcoming National event of the inauguration and what that means to people, as
well as think about the state of the world you currently inhabit. If Dr. Kind were alive today, do you think
his dream would be different? How so? If you think it would be the same, how come?
What is your own dream about the future of the world? Construct your own “I
Have a Dream…” and show me how you conceive of the American dream. What kind of impact will the next four years have
on that dream?
As of tomorrow, Jan. 20, 2017, the man, the myth, the legend, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as President of the United States and also commander and chief of our military. That frightens me considering what he has done. But what scared me even more is the fact that after everything that happened during the debates and campaign this man still won. I did not know racism was still this popular in America. I am trying to think that I am safe because I am Puerto Rican and Puerto Rico is part of the United States and in my honest opinion will become a state within the next 10 years. But the fact that I am titled Spanish frightens me. Our President elect seems to not like Spanish people very much. I am hoping that it is just immigrants but I have a feeling it is anything that is not white.
ReplyDeleteMLK had a dream of equality. We were, I would say, 95% complete with that (for African American males). But now I feel for the next 4 years, possibly 8 years because who knows at this point, MLK’s dream of equality will have a minor or, frightening to say, major set back. Our President elect makes fun of disables and seems to think as all African Americans as black hoodlums. He uses Chicago as a prime example because of it’s high crime rate. And now sees the whole African American race as what is happening in Chicago. Not all of them are gang-banging drug dealers. I mean, one of them was the President for the past 8 years and he did hell of a job. Better of a job then President Trump will do. MLK’s dream of equality would, unfortunately, not change if he lived now. Want to know why? Because everything they have worked for could be possibly stripped away from them. Many things could change for you if you are not white. Maybe his speech would change a little, but only to add that they have came very far and will not give up so that they do not lose what they have acquired.
I really hope that almost nothing crazy that President Trump planned gets passed. I am hoping that he brings back jobs like he said he would. I am hoping white people’s visions of races they see on a daily basis does not change. I am hoping this country does not become white supremacist. I am hoping for the next 4 years my life is not impacted too much because of some absurd action our President does. And I am in great hopes that someone can beat this bastard out in 4 years. If not, I am fleeing to Canada as soon as he gets reelected.
I have a dream. I have a dream that my vision of people will not change. I have a dream that this will not be our worst President. I have a dream that not absurd ideas are passed by congress. I have a dream that United States will get passed this. I have a dream after we are done these next 4 years we will come back stronger than ever. I have a dream my life, and many others lives, will not be impacted too much. I have a dream that society will not change. I have a dream that the United States WILL get passed this.
Jk I love our president lol
DeleteSo… tomorrow is the day. That day is… well, it's-- FRIDAY! Oh and it's also the inauguration of Donald Trump. I like to think of it as Friday. To many people, this is the worst thing that could ever happen to the world, that this is the most tragic thing to ever happen to their life, while I sit here and can't relate to them. What happened in November is coming to life tomorrow. There is nothing anyone could say or do that would change it-- so why dwell and stress over it? Whatever happens after tomorrow is something we will have to live with for at least the next four years. Yes, I see where some people will freak out and say “that is why you should be worried,” but they're wrong, because it doesn't matter what they think or how they feel, it's going to happen so instead of acting crazy about it, instead just prepare for it and deal with it. Too many people are letting tomorrow be a life ruiner for just them when really, we're all in it together. We currently live in an okay world. We live in a place with peace, with violence, and with protest. And guess what we'll be living in when trump is finally sworn in as sour president? Peace, violence, and protest. It'll all be the same, we'll just have different amounts of it all and that's where we come in to prepare for it. If Dr. King were still alive, his dream would still be to have equality. With the way Trump treats certain people, Dr. King would still root for equality-- 100%. And that is because equality is important, hence the reason he gave his speech in the first place.
ReplyDeleteMy own dream about the future world is happiness. I hope that Trump can get his head out from his butt and finally realize the position he applied for and received. I hope that he turns stuff around and betters America in better ways. My dream is that Trump will do amazing things for us and turn into a more likable person, because he then will be a more likable president. And once he is more likable, the world will be able to function a whole lot better, making our future brighter. The new educator women girl that he just elected won't take out college money away, but she'll instead grant us more. Women's rights won't be taken away, instead they'll have better than ever insurance coverage for all women. Trump will file his tax returns. And as all that as just a start, the world can only get better-- especially if after the next four years is over, Trump isn't reelected.
ReplyDeleteAll week I’ve been anxious, and I just realized why. My college apps are done, I don’t have a lot of schoolwork, all the things I would normally be stressed about are pretty much nonexistent. I realized today, though, that my anxiety stems from the inauguration today. In less than two hours, our country will be run by the republican party, a party intent on limiting the basic human rights of anyone who isn’t a straight white male. And this worries me. It still hasn’t completely sunk in, the fact that Trump won the election. The morning after the election, I heard the news and started crying uncontrollably, it felt like a nightmare. It’s been more than a month and I still haven’t completely grasped the reality of what is happening to our country.
If Martin Luther King Jr. were still around today, I’d imagine that he’d have the same dream, the hope for racial equality. Unfortunately, our country has not progressed that much in this area. Sure, there are no longer “white only” bathrooms and water fountains, but just because the inequality isn’t in our faces, doesn’t mean it’s not there. Many people don’t realize that racial inequality stems from hundreds of years ago, when the first slaves were bought here in 1619 to the Jamestown settlement aboard a ship, (ironically named, I think) the White Lyon. Racial inequality is so deeply imbedded into American society that it’s become the norm, white people don’t even see it most of the time because they’re blinded by their own privilege; myself included. Even though I make an effort to become aware of the social injustice prevalent in our country, I sometimes remain ignorant to it because of the color of my skin. Acknowledging my own privilege is something I constantly strive to achieve. So, since people of color are still shot dead in the streets by police officers for literally doing nothing, since they’re pushed into poverty and poor school districts, since the average black woman is 3-4 times more likely to die from childbirth complications than the average white woman due to lack of adequate healthcare, I think it’s safe to say that MLK’s dream would be exactly the same if he were alive today.
I have a dream much like MLK’s, except I wish for more than racial equality. I have a dream that one day, people of all races, genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, beliefs, will live in peace together. This sounds very idealistic, I kind of feel like the girl in “Mean Girls” who’s like “we should all bake a cake and be happy”, but it’s really how I feel. What kind of impact will the next four years have on this dream? I don’t know. I can’t predict the future, but judging from Trump’s policies, vice president, and cabinet picks, it doesn’t look too bright. I can’t imagine any progress on the LGBTQ liberation front, considering that our vice president thinks that HOMOSEXUALITY IS A MOTHERFUVCKIN DISEASE THAT CAN BE CURED WITH THERAPY??? What the actual fuck this fact alone blows my mind like he’s such a hateful man, yet he’s just been given so much power and wow I’m literally about to cry thinking about it, it’s so upsetting I really can’t. Yeah so I think it’s pretty certain that social issues are about to get a whole lot worse, and that Obama’s social progress is about to unravel. It’s like taking one step forward and two steps backwards.
I have a dream that this world wasn't filled with so many entitled racist sexist homophobic discriminating meanies. I have a dream where I can walk into a room and people don't expect things because they feel they "worked" for it. People who beg for a "capitalist" society because they think if they were truly measured from their work effort, they'd be at the bottom. There are minorities who work their ass off and in a capitalist society the top 1% wouldn't be so goddamn white.
ReplyDeletePeople want that capitalist society because they know that they will prosper because they are filled with white privilege and won't acknowledge it.
I won't such a damn communist if maybe the we were all born equal no matter the color, sexuality, religion, socioeconomic level.
In Dr. King’s speech he hoped for the unity of everybody of every race and ethnicity. If he was still alive today he would be appalled of the lack of improvement and changed our country has still yet to make. It is the twenty first century and we still have a problem regarding race relations. It does not matter what race or ethnicity you are, we are all the same and should be treated so.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. King were still alive today his dream would be the same due to the fact that we still have problems with race. Problems regarding race were supposed to end after the days of segregation, but they are not, therefore I believe Dr. King’s speech would portray the same message as it did the first time. However, I feel as if his speech would be more urgent and passionate and almost desperate like to persuade the american people to forget the minuscule differences between each other and come together fairly and peacefully.
I have a dream that this world can come together and realize that we are all the same and should be treated the same. Therefore, my dream is similar to Dr. King’s, but I want to add more happiness and positivity and peace into my dream because that is what our country desperately needs. However, my dream may be impossible to reach within the next four years due to our new president. But I do wish once President Trump has been in office for awhile that race or gender discrimination and violence at least do not increase because that is the last thing our country needs.
Today is the day-- January 20th, 2017. Barack Obama will leave the White House and a new man will take his place. A businessman, a money-maker billionaire whose mission is to “Make America Great Again”. A man by the name of Donald J. Trump. It’s kind of morbid when you think about it. I don’t remember much with George W. Bush, but with Obama, I do. I remember him and John McCain. I remember the election going on and all of the controversies that came with it. I remember his Inauguration (I also remember it being really lit too)-- I remember it all. Granted, I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but now that I’m older, I do. Obama has been our leader for the past eight years, and within those eight years, not only has our country grown in more ways than we could’ve ever imagined, I have as well. In a sense, I “grew up” with Obama. He’s the only President that I truly remember. And now he’s leaving. It is 12:40pm as we speak, and Trump has most likely already sworn into office. Not going to lie, I’m kind of scared. Even from such a young age, I was familiar with the name “Trump”. Both of my parents work in the casinos and have been for the last seventeen years. And I remember they would complain about how horrible of a boss he was. But imagine him as our President, as our chief of military. I don’t know what is going to happen, but I can only hope that good comes out of it.
ReplyDeleteIf MLK was alive today, he would probably be disappointed. We’ve come such a long way, but in recent years, we’ve reverted back-- back to our old ways. I think his dream would still be the same: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Still, in 2017, people are being mistreated because of their skin color or just by what they look like in general. In reality, I don’t think his dream ever came true. Progress was made, yes. But it never came true. I hope it does though. Whenever that will be, I hope it does come true.
I have a dream that every single one of us will be happy. I have a dream that young boys and girls will grow up to a nation that accepts each other, that loves each other. I have a dream that America will get past these next four years, stronger and more understanding than ever. I dream that our country will come together and find goodness in all things bad. I have a dream that people of all ages and sizes won’t have to suffer anymore. I dream of peace and equality for all. I don’t know what will happen in these next four years, but I desperately hope, Trump will “take his head out of the gutter” and become a leader, become the person we all need him to be. Not a billionaire businessman.
Unfortunately I don’t know or understand much of politics. The only knowledge I truly have on it, is when we talk in class about everything. And the only time I really seen for myself how much I actually despise Trump, is when we did our mock trial. So thank you, because I now have a better understanding on both political parties, though I need to educate myself more because I feel like a deer in front of headlights through all of this. I honestly am so disappointed with those who voted and gave him the privilege to be the President of the U.S. If anyone, with just a good heart, and pretty much common sense truly listened to what he says, and what he “stands” for, and everything, they would see HE IS A TOTAL ASSHOLE AND DOUCHE. (Excuse my french.) It’s terrifying. I’m truly scared for not only myself, but everyone else. Minorities, blacks, girls, men, muslims, absolutely everyone. I’m terrified that our Vice President thinks you can use electrotherapy to get the gay out of someone. And that my man is supposed to give me permission to go out, etc. I’m terrified that the woman who may be in charge of Education is just a billionaire, and wants to cut funding because and she won’t understand the American people, BECAUSE SHE IS A BILLIONAIRE/ MILLIONAIRE/ WHATEVER SHE IS, AND DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE “GOING THROUGH A HARD TIME” BECAUSE ONE SHE”S WHITE AND TWO SHE'S A WHITE RICH PERSON. So loans and all that has never had to impact her because she can just pay for it herself. I’m terrified that the right to do what you want with YOUR OWN BODY, is going to be snatched away, and that if god forbid I needed to get an abortion I wouldn’t be able to. I’m terrified that the President sees woman, as toys. As objects. That he can do whatever he wants and rules don’t apply to him. I’m terrified that he wants to build a wall, he wants to kick immigrants who have families in our country out. He wants to change mortgages, funding, everything. But do not be mistaken, he is not my president. Donald Trump is not my president. I do not support him. And I beg and hope that he will not last. I truly hope he loses his position and someone better can fill in. Now, I don’t wish bad on him, for I have to live here, in America, and will be immensely impacted by his actions. But I truly hope he does not last.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. King was alive today, I believe he would still be the same person and fighting for the same causes. I feel like he would continue and succeed in gaining equality for everyone. My dream is simple. I want peace, justice, and equality for everyone. Honestly, I have no idea what the next four years will bring. I truly hope it doesn’t take us back in time… but I have a feeling it will.
Donald J. Trump is now our president. It is a bit scary that a man like that can become president in 2017. But what’s done is done, and now we will have to all accept it. If Dr. King was still alive, I think he would have the same dream. His dream never fully came true and honestly there are a lot of people who are still racist. MLK’s dream was coming along very well, however there are still many hate crimes that happen daily.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream that people do not have to stress over money anymore. I have a dream that with hard work, things pay off for everyone. I have a dream that everyone can dream. I have a dream that everyone has the means to take care of themselves.
I don’t think that Donald Trump is going to try and help people like Obama did. He is not going to try and give opportunities to everyone who needs them. He has talked about jobs, and honestly any amount of jobs would help, but how much can we trust what this man says? This man is our president and I am going to have to live with it. The next 4 to 8 years will not be the best, but everything will work out, I don’t think that he will put America in reverse.
If Dr. King we're still alive he would've ashamed that we're still talking about this. It's a shame that we still have to fight for woman's rights and to argue the freedom of any American citizen, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, political views, anything. I wish people would just stop. Everyone has their own opinions but we have to come together on something soon. I have a dream that one day certain things won't be shamed and thought of as degrading. We should not think differently of race. We could judge someone on their actions but not of their skin color. Everyone is the same. I'm not scared of the next 4 years and Trump doesn't scare me. I don't like how everyone is violently protesting but maybe it will make a statement. I don't know much about politics so I really can't suggest an outcome of the next four years. I do hope one day minorities aren't looked down upon. Trump has done that and it's really not okay. I know we'll all work together and not let each other fall. So therefore I'm not scared. I would do anything to make sure my friends are okay and most of them are black, Asian, gay, not the richest, can't afford health care, etc. So therefore, I have a dream that this all works out. Maybe the things Trump is saying he'll do won't actually work out and Congress won't pass it. Maybe is just a hope, but it's my "dream"
ReplyDeleteIf MLK was alive today, his “I Have A Dream” speech would be exactly the same. His dream was getting closer and closer every day, but all of his hard work will be set back. Since Trump is now our president, he will make sure MLK’s dream doesn’t come true. Today, people are still judged by the color of their skin, so he would still be fighting to end racism. If he were here to see Trump get elected, he would only work harder to see that equality existed in our country.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream that we won’t discriminate based on sex or race. That people can be individuals without being made fun of. I have a dream that we can live in a world where we think of how our actions affect others. I have a dream that everyone is given an equal chance. The next four years will be a dark time for our country. Our leader, Trump, discriminates based on sex and race. This means that he may pass laws that negatively affect women and citizens that aren’t white. This crushes my dream because I want everyone to be given an equal chance.
All along I have been dreading Inauguration Day, despite which monster would take the podium. To most people, this inauguration is a new beginning after 8 years with the same face of America. For me, this will be the first election that will directly affects me. If my generation were to vote in this past election, I feel as though the outcome would hopefully be different. Anyway, if Dr. King was around today, I think his dream would still be the same. Although he successfully facilitated the civil rights movement during the 1960's, discrimination is not a thing of the past. I think that although discrimination is somewhat better today, it is not nearly far gone. Now with Donald J. Trump as our president, I'm more sure of discrimination's prevalence in society. My dream for the future expands on Dr. King's. I dream that one day all everyone will be accepted in society. I dream that one day the LGBT community will get the fair treatment they deserve. I dream that women will be granted the permission to choose what goes on with their bodies ALWAYS. I dream that people will make a better effort to choose their words tactfully and respect one another. My American dream is rather cliché. I wish for everyone to have the same opportunity. It is often said that if you have a dream, America will provide you with the means to accomplish it. Often, this is not so. America does not mention that this is only true for upper class white men. America often forgets about the undervalued, impoverished minority. I feel as though the next four years will bring some come-ups but also some set-backs. Come-ups seem possible because though he's a scumbag, I do have faith that he's a decent businessman. Maybe we will "win bigly." I do not think it is fair to predict only negative things for Donald Trump. Someone said "Hoping that Donald Trump fails is like hoping for a boat to sink that we're all on." I think this quote sums up my hopes for the next four years. Although I don't like Donald Trump, I hope he turns his act around and impacts America positively. On the downside, I think that Trump will violate the rights of Americans. I think that with his team of republican billionaires, we are doomed when it comes to financial aid and women's rights. Also, I think Christianity will have an overwhelming impact on the decisions made, which is not fair as a non-denominational country. Overall, I think that the next four years will be turbulent. So far, there has already been several protests in just the past two days. Hopefully Trump will surprise us, positively of course.

ReplyDeleteThe Trump’s era has begun. It is time to see how our nation will turn out now. If Mr. King is still alive, I believe that he would be impressed and disappointed in how our world has become. From his times in the 1960s to now, Mr. King would be happy to see how his dream inspired millions of people. Mr. King's words inspired celebrities, politicians, activists and much more. Thanks to Mr. King, our society wouldn't be where it is today. There would be still segregation and no equal rights to black people. With all of that, here is why Mr. King would also be disappointed with our nation. While part of his dream was achieved, the other half is still there. Racism and hate crimes are still alive. There is still no equality in our nation. Discrimination didn't go away in our nation. With Trump as our president, I doubt that he would push Mr. King's dream; likely he would push it back.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream that people would think before they act. I don't want anymore mindless bloodshed over discrimination. I just want our next generation feeling safe in our nation and not to feel fear once they step out of their door. I want the title of our nation, the home of the free, to come true. With Trump as our 45th president, I hope that he can prove to the world that he is capable of running a country. Trump would probably do the opposite of my dream and make the USA look bad. Until he does good things, my expectations are low.
One word. Confused. I am so so so so confused on how the hell Donald Trump is our president. What is wrong with America? However, we need to face this terrifying reality. Except some people do not even want to consider it, they are in denial. People are going around smashing windows, vandalizing cities, rioting. Now, I hate Trump just as much as those people but what is all that violence going to do? A horrible person is our president yes, but what people are doing is only making it worse. Now, I really do not pay attention to politics. So it puts me at a disadvantage to really know what is going on in Trump's head. But in all honestly, I am a little bit nervous of what he will do, but I am not freaking out. I feel like half of his beliefs and the things he wants to change won’t even pass through congress. Some of his ideas are just so insane and racist, therefore the congress will not let it happen. I don't know, maybe I am just naive but that is what I think as of right now. I think everyone needs to just hope and pray he doesn't destroy America. If Dr. King was here he would be so disappointed. Trump and the way the people of America are acting go against everything he ever stood for. If he were still here his dream would be the same, his dream of equality. I have a dream to live in a world where no acts of discrimination towards color, religion, gender, ethnicity, lgbt. Things are no way how they used to be, but discrimination still wreaks havoc in our society.
ReplyDeleteCurrently 2 days into Trump's presidency and half of me is worried while the other is not. I am worried because he has absolutely no experience with politics and I do not understand how he expects to be our president. He also is hiring more people without experience. Although these are great worries of mine the other half of me is not worried because I do not listen to politics so the less I know the less I worry. Also, I believe that people might've been equally as worried when we had our first African American president, however I personally do not feel badly effected by Obama's presidency. I am not sure if we are worrying for nothing or is there many reasons to worry.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. King was alive today he would still have the same dream of equality. Although we have improved greatly I am afraid that Trump may bring us in reverse. From the little I may know, I have heard that he stereotypes everyone and has made fun of the disabled. Our president also blocks, subtweets and tweets just about anyone. So this is currently day two of having a teenage girl as our president. And that right there scares me. So if Dr. King was still alive he would be highly upset with who we have just elected as our President. Basically someone who believes and acts in opposition to Dr. King. My personal dream is to let everyone live without fear. Sitting in class and learning about how anyone who isn't white have to fear police and girls have to fear men and the police once they're raped throws my heart into my gut. I wish we could all live in a world where people didn't have to wake up and fear that because of they way they look they have to watch out and watch what they're doing. They have too make sure their actions aren't suspicious or their clothes are long enough. I Have a Dream that some day we will have so much equality that people do not have to fear other people. However the only problem with my dream is our new president. With our new president may come the opposite of my dream. African Americans may have to fear more along with basically anyone who isn't a white middle aged male. So my dream may have to start after these next four years when we hopefully have a more experienced and sensible president.
We now have President Trump which to most people was a complete shocker just as it was for me, but the one thing this election has displayed more than anything is hatred. Sadly for all of the people that voted against Trump but now openly declare how much they hate him are just hypocrites to what they planned to stop. His win is a result of a majority of people silenced by political correctness, the liberals won the culture war but often lack the ability to be open-minded. I am sad to say that I no longer identify with any party and I’m hoping for an end to this country. To many people say what sounds nice rather than what they mean and I am no different. I know that I have worked on it and the fact that almost all of the people I know are liberal has without a doubt changed my perspective on the way places should be run but after seeing how the people have reacted to this election I am tempted to denounce American politics simply because this isn’t the nation that I have grown to know. Before I go into detail on my America I must first answer what if Dr. King was alive? Well, he would be incredibly disappointed in the way this country is. Violent protesting, closemindedness, and an inability to love one another. To complain about a government that 4 months ago you praised.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream that this country will end. That a hate war will result from this election and cause the second American civil war. We’ve become a weak nation, an uneducated nation full of fools that believe there are only two perspectives within this world rather than noticing the grey of the world. A nation that has abandoned its own people for the people of other nations. A nation divided against itself. My dream does not only result in the end of America but also in the creation of something much greater, a nation run by the intelligent rather than the fools, an education system that actually teaches people stuff, and finally a leader that will not tolerate hatred. I give this nation 6 months before we go to war because after seeing the hatred displayed by some of the people on Mr. Trumps inauguration.
Sadly, I am still in the works of determining how I will take control of this nation and how it will be run. The only thing I can say is that before this nation goes to crap I will have my plan ready so that way if the country needs a leader I can take over to result in as little blood shed as possible and maybe set the tone for the way that this world should one day be.
The world seems to be crashing down right about now. We are so divided yet completely in sync. It's a weird way to feel. So connected yet so unsure. As you know the 45th president is in office and creating all kinds of chaos. The world around him is fighting him off with each new battle. Today's United States are not so United fighting over who deserves a voice and who doesn't. It's so sad to see people trying to rip each others rights away from their neighbor, their co worker...their friends. I don't want to see our lives go on like this. My dream is that people learn to respect one another's needs and opinions. I have a dream that one day people will at helping out a fellow human like a civic duty and not a here and there charity case. I have a dream that the forces at work will unite and create a better America. One that we can be proud of. One that heals and does not hurt. I have a dream people become kind and forgiving. I have a dream people see each other as human beings regardless of their skin color or their sexual preference. I'm hopeful that we can come together. Because if you don't have hope you have nothing. We have to have hope.
ReplyDeleteDonald Trump...a man who was given a "small loan of a million dollars" as a child, would not direct the financial government to help those who are low class, work their way up to middle or high class.
ReplyDeleteDonald Trump...a man who advises to "grab her by the p***y", claims to make America great again? hmmm...I wish strength upon those feminists and equality protesters to get through their disappointment in hope for more rights as humans.
America is slowly losing it's liberality, it's power, and most importantly, it's people whom make it America.
Build a wall? I thought America is known for freedom... A country that you can escape to from another that is limiting your privileges and right to live as you were destined to.
I have a dream...to bring America back again.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. King were alive today, he’d be appalled for two reasons. (1) The hate only decreased for mere seconds before it rose right back up again. King would have seen America lose progress to selfishness, ignorance, and generational encouragement of racism all around. He’d see not outward hatred towards minorities, lower classes, women, etc but instead a silent hared that plagues not only the hateful but the neutral as well. It sits in their soul, is seen through their facial expressions and indiscreet walk to the other side of the street upon sight of a black man, their played up racist jokes, their ability to look away. Is hatred worse when it is loud or silent? Is it easier to fight against something that everyone can see or a mere invisible ghost that no one wants to even speak about? The times have not changed, they’ve only gotten worse. (2) Plenty of people, of all races, use King’s word incorrectly. He said “darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that”, hate cannot cure hate, only love can. He was adamant about peaceful protest. During the recent riots, lots of participants post his quotes over photos of rioters setting fire to buildings, breaking windows, etc. This not only instigates the arguers that claim Black Lives Matter is based in violence, but affects the reputation of African Americans in terms of stereotypes: fighting a violence that is invisible to most with more violence that is visible to most makes the rioter look like the bad guy. It can read immature, and to those who already see African Americans as lesser people feed on stuff like that to prove “their point”. It isn’t right, but it is avoidable and replaceable by something way way more effective which is peaceful protest.
I have a dream to see the world full of peace. Although, I might not live long enough so I have a dream that the world will see peace someday. Peace meaning more than just hippie love. Peace meaning togetherness, unity, equality, empathy, support, acceptance. Peace meaning no violence, no hate, no disgust. The next four years, peace will become more distant perhaps than ever before. But the next four years are what will make peace, whenever it occurs, that much more lovely. The next four years, all I can do is hope.
Dr. King had a dream of equality. He wanted white men and black men and blue men to look at each other as equals. He wanted for everyone to be judged by the quality of their character and not the color of their skin. This dream has made immense progress, but is not near complete. At one extreme, you have the families who for some reason still have not progressed as human beings and continue to teach their children that their race is superior to another, and that other races should be looked down upon. Even a lot of people who aren’t racist, who say they believe every race is equal and they don’t look at others differently because of their skin color are still racist. They don’t try to be, they truly do believe that every race should be equal but they these this inadvertent connotations that are made by society. Specifically the media. Movies, TV shows, the news, for years upon they portray races and genders certain ways and that’s just how it has come to be in people’s minds. I’m not going to lie, I’ve fallen into that. If a large black man walking down the street, I feel a way, just like if I see a white young man in a black hoodie, I get worried, it’s not how I want to be, it’s just how it’s become. What this means is we have to keep progressing. We need to come together as human beings and keep working towards accomplishing Dr. King’s dream until our kids do not even think twice when they see someone of a different color.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. King was still alive, he would definitely have a new dream. It would be to just stop discrimination, period. This country in specific, has went from truly thinking that black people are not even human, or equal to whites, and treating them like animals, to purposely discriminating against them. It has already been established, white men and women are no different than black men and women. But for some reason, the government and large industries and law enforcement still decide to target black people, more specifically and not limited to, the poor. The documentary “13th” opened my eyes to this in a lot of different ways, slavery is still alive today in many ways. That excerpt in the 13th amendment, literally makes slavery legal even to this day. And instead of guarding against this exception to the abolition of slavery, America has abused this excerpt and turned it against the poor and the minorities in the country, for nothing more than monetary gain. It’s indescribable how terrible that is, ruining the lives of people who cannot fight it so the big rich white man can make money. Honestly can’t believe it. And the media, the way minorities are portrayed in the media compared to whites is unjustifiable. The media could singlehandedly keep racism alive the way they run things. Dr. King’s new dream would be for all people, of all races, of all genders, of all socioeconomic classes to be truly equal in America.

ReplyDeleteAt the end of the day Donald J. Trump is the President of the United States of America and he is also the highest in command in the military and my boss. I respect him as my boss and as the President. I will always respect the President of the United States but that does not mean I have to respect him as a person. As military personnel I am going to refrain from commenting on him besides stating the fact that I respect that man in the Oval Office. If MLK was still alive today his dream would still be the same and it would be even more powerful now that society sees the new power in the United States as an excuse to say and do as they please. Which includes racism unfortunately. It hasn't gone away and slowly gotten better but it seems that to slot of my friends the work that MLK went through as well as all of the people he marched and fought with will be rear ended and shut down like an ice cream store in the winter. People still want the icecream and love it and support the business and eating it while others will disagree saying it needs to stay in its lane and just go away because there are “unspoken rules” all must follow which also means icecream can only be enjoyed in summer. That was confusing I know but I tried. At the end of the day I will always fight for equality no matter what.
